Shorts
Dave, a screenwriter new to LA, is invited for a gourmet meal by his cousin Paul, whom Dave has only met once. Paul, is an established actor and has an underwear model girlfriend (Lauren), so he accepts. Dave smokes a joint on the way over, and arrives to find that there is a deliciously aromatic meal cooking, and that Lauren is, indeed extremely appetizing as well. Dave settles in and soon notices a BROKEN LAMP as the banter between Paul and Lauren escalates to sincere insults. Dave senses something is up, as Lauren insults Paul's manhood over and over, and Paul is a bit 'too nice' to Dave. Accidentally, Dave super-glues himself to the floor just as Paul and Lauren's fight escalates to physical violence.
Animation/Music/Shorts
A mass of shapeless forms gravitate in a row towards a dark, gigantic sphere. One by one, they get tossed by tentacles to become a part of the ominous sphere. Suddenly, one of the forms dramatically awakens and struggles against the stream in order to escape. After an arduous journey filled with overcoming obstacles, it finally escapes this world. However, he realizes none too soon that his former world was but a small part of a much more enormous universe- the journey has only just begun.
Documentary/Family/Features/Music
Responding to a groundswell of interest from amateur pianists worldwide, the Van Cliburn Foundation created a competition for amateurs only, held every four years. Seventy-five non-professional pianists over 35 years old perform in three nerve-wracking elimination rounds before a distinguished jury and discerning audience. The film provides an intimate look into the lives of these colorful, multi-faceted competitors as they strive to balance the demands of work and family with their love of music in their home environments around the world, and then later at the competition in Fort Worth, TX. Having made their careers outside of music in fields ranging from real estate to medicine, professional tennis to education, the competition represents the fulfillment of long-deferred dreams. For competitors who have faced such extraordinary challenges as drug addiction, AIDS, or political asylum, the competition is also a triumph over adversity. For all, it represents an overwhelming desire to express a deeper side of themselves, musically and otherwise.Commentary from noted American pianist Van Cliburn and gold medalists from the Foundation's professional competition, along with outstanding performances of great classical masterworks--from Beethoven to Alkan and from Rachmaninoff to Barber--complement the action in a film that celebrates the creator and the competitor in each of us.
